First Coaches Training Session, February 6th, 2010
On February 6th, we had our first coaches training session. Thanks to a group of young ladies from the U11 and U12 United teams who volunteered to be in a practice session. Mike Allen ran the on-floor training session while several other coaches observed. This session was on Finishing.
The intent is for coaches to see how a practice can be run from early setup of cones and having all other necessary equipment within easy reach. The session then progresses; how a coach interacts or when not to interact, ‘coach in the flow’ – not to stop everyone but to make minor individual corrections, suggestions during play, allowing players to continue and to learn valuable steps from starting a practice to building complexity or technique that ends in a game. The coach follow-up is to work through coaching notes at the end of the session.
This is a great way for all of the coaches working with United to learn more about our approach to coaching and expectations. The United coaching staff will follow coaches to practices and mentor their activities as well as in games. We’re excited about the growth of excellent coaches and know this is necessary commitment on our part.
