Importance of Development Curriculum

Why a soccer club? Oshkosh United Soccer Club is a select soccer club for boys and girls ages U-11 to U-19. United teams play against other select teams in the East Central Soccer Division of the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association. Teams also participate in soccer tournaments throughout the state. The ultimate goal of Oshkosh United Soccer Club is to provide each player with an enjoyable, rewarding and challenging soccer experience in a positive, supportive environment. Appropriate soccer skills, tactical training and sportsmanship are top player priorities.

Why volunteer? OUSC was established as a volunteer-run organization for youth in the community to learn to play competitive soccer. Family volunteering was and continues to be the most fundamental need for the club, keeping costs to a minimum, growing financial opportunity for disadvantaged youth to play and supporting all activities of the club. What will my child learn from being in a competitive versus recreational club? Through soccer we strive to teach players to be self-sufficient, to be leaders and risk takers within a framework of personal responsibility, self sacrifice and teamwork. Oshkosh United players become individuals, teammates, and leaders both on and off the field.

Oshkosh United is dedicated to developing individuals to their full potential. Training involves a multitude of activities that emphasize individual and team skills. We feel a mastery of the basic skills of dribbling, receiving, passing, shooting and defending are the foundation from which players are able to reach their full potential. We employ small-sided games, such as two against two, to allow players more opportunities to interact with the ball and make decisions that affect the immediate outcome of the game.  Players play in a number of positions over the course of the year to truly develop as well-rounded soccer players.

At Oshkosh United our soccer players learn to win graciously, lose with dignity, but above all, to relish the challenges and opportunities afforded by competition. [TOP]

How do costs for Oshkosh United compare to other clubs?

  • Fall only: $140
  • Fall & Spring: $490
  • Spring only: $350
  • Girls U16 & U17 Spring only: $300.

This has been a hot topic at times as new clubs as well as established club charges are made known to other club parents. Our costs are average for teams in the area. Our costs tend to cover more activities and requirements than others. Throughout the state, costs range from $2000 plus parent booster club fees and parents who do not volunteer are assessed $30 per hour of the six plus each must provide the club! Some clubs charge less than $200 per player with the understanding that tournament and ref fees are paid by the teams. Some clubs also ask parents to find and pay for their own coach, provide that coach, if necessary, with housing and expenses.

In addition, the fee you pay through Oshkosh United pays to maintain a volunteer club, four tournament, coach and ref fees, liability insurance through WYSA, WYSA player and East Central player fees. - there is quite a breakdown in total fees paid per player and OUSC does a great job in charging you only once for all of them. This year, district and state fees went up, the reason returning families have seen an increase in their fees.

What kind of commitment will my son or daughter be expected to maintain?

Each team is a little bit different and dependent on season of play. There are now two seasons and depending on the age group, your child may be on a team that a coach would like to see play in the fall, play together during the winter possibly at the Y in a winter league and again in the spring league. During fall and spring, the coach is committed to running a minimum of one training session per week plus games and possibly tournament(s).

During the winter, teams may form for both recreational and competitive soccer indoors at one of several locations in the area. The 20th Street Y has an indoor soccer arena which is becoming very popular for soccer teams who want to spend more time together. There are no training sessions unless parents get together and offer to pay to rent the facility.

Spring officially begins in April with some coaches volunteering to run training sessions as early as February / March in area schools / gyms, etc. The coach may start with one practice per week leading to two practices or more per week as the actual season begins. [TOP]

What is State League?

State League begins around U13. As a development club, OUSC doesn't push for any particular team to apply for State League under or at U13. If however, a team merits application, the coach and team rep work with parents of that team to determine who will stay with the team, commit to the travel, commit to the intensity of play and practice and a slightly different season, often competing with school sports.

State League is an application and review based decision by a state level organization. Application is only available to teams who have an outstanding win record in both league and tournament play. With the application, a team resume is written and submitted. There are two levels of teams in State League. Winners in the State League may be selected to advance to regional play or higher depending on outcome.

It is a tough, highly competitive demand on youth. But, it is rewarding when as a team, you are selected for State League and you understand what the next level of play looks like.

Travel example. The 2010 Boys White team was a State League team. This was their second attempt at State League application. Their games were on weekends with the exception of two games played on a Wednesday. Half of the games were at County Park, the other half played in Milwaukee to Madison to Wausau, sometimes on the same weekend.
